Overview

The choice of a suitable antidepressant for maintenance therapy depends not only on the efficacy of the drug to be administered, but on its metabolization and the gender of the patient, his/her age and/or other medication, too. The goal of the study was to compare the therapeutic effect and incidence of sexual dysfunction in patients in paroxetine maintenance therapy treating a depressive and/or anxiety disorder with respect to gender and CYP2D6 activity. The findings support equal CYP2D6 activity in both genders and equal antidepressant effect disregarding the gender and CYP2D6 activity.

A unique finding of the study is varying incidence of sexual dysfunction depending on CYP2D6 activity within the group of female patients.

Key words:
antidepressants, CYP2D6, gender, efficacy, sexual dysfunction.
