Overview
Regular intensive physical training induces cardiovascular changes including so called athlete’s heart. It is characterized by left ventricular hypertrophy, differing in many aspects from pathological cardiac hypertrophy. However, this differentiation is not always easy. Nevertheless for the athlete’s future it seems to be crucial to exclude the coincidence with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the most frequent cause of sudden death in young sportsmen. The following review summarizes practical issues in differentiating athlete’s heart from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
Keywords:
atlete´s heart, left ventricular hypertrophy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
