Overview
The authors analyze current demographic situation and its prognosis for coming decades in the Czech Republic. Aging and hypertension have many common signs particularly in the way of affecting the cardiovascular system. Hypertension is one of the main causes of heart failure, deterioration of renal functions and development of diabetic complications, eventually even of dementia. Morbidity and morbidity in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and complications also grow with the age. The authors point out morphological and functional changes of cardiovascular system in old age generally. The article is a practice-oriented overview of epidemiology, etiopathogenesis and treatment of hypertension in relation to the aging process. They point out specifics of clinical picture of hypertension in old age (including isolated systolic hypertension), difficulties in diagnosis and treatment. Effective therapy can prevent development of such complications or considerably slow their progress even in older age. It reduces incidence of vascular cerebral accidents by 34 %, ischemic heart diseases by 19 % and vascular death together by 23 %. It is of crucial significance until the age of 80.
Key words:
Geriatrics – aging – heart in old age – hypertension – epidemiology – etiopathogenesis – treatment
