Overview
Josef Hoder (1912–1987) was one of founders and the foremost representative of anaesthesiology, resuscitation and intensive care medicine in the Czechoslovakia. On the request of professor A. Jirásek he fully devoted himself to the development of anaesthesiology and resuscitation as a medical specialty on the 1st Surgical Clinic of the Prague Medical Faculty of Charles University in 1947. He was highly active in the foundation and evolution of the Society of Anaesthesiologists and for many years he was the president of the Czechoslovak Society of Anaesthesiologists Committee. Between 1957 and 1983 he was the anaesthesiologist-in-chief for the Central Bohemia region and between 1975 and 1981 he was the anaesthesiologist-in-chief of the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic. He was the clinical leader of anaesthesia in his hospital from its humble beginnings to the establishment of the first national undergraduate Clinic of Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation of the Faculty for General Medicine of Charles University in Prague. He achieved the scientific degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences and the academic degree of Associate Professor.
