The Patient Will Feel Comfortable Only with a Properly Chosen Absorption Aid

27. 2. 2020

While before the approval of the amendment to the Public Health Insurance Act, it was possible to issue a prescription only for one type of aid firmly tied to a particular level of incontinence, now it is allowed to freely combine aids according to the individual needs of the patient. The modern market offers a wide range of aids − but how to choose a product that matches specific needs?

The Degree of Incontinence and Physical Condition of the Patient Decide

When choosing an aid, at least orient yourself by the degree of incontinence and consider situations in which leaks are strongest. It often happens that patients with milder urinary leakage want − from a mistaken sense of greater security − to prescribe aids with higher absorption capacity, which are, however, more suitable for higher degrees of incontinence. From an economic standpoint, such a procedure is inappropriate.

Physical fitness of the individual is also important when choosing. Active individuals may prefer urological pads, which are similar to menstrual ones but have a special composition ensuring excellent protection and discretion. On the other hand, for immobile patients, diaper pants that adapt well to anatomical conditions are intended. It is also necessary to consider the anatomical differences between the male and female bodies and select aids accordingly.

It is also suitable to combine aids according to the patient's current needs, for example, choosing diapers with higher absorption capacity at night, while during the day, aids with basic absorption capacity are often sufficient.

How to Choose the Correct Size?

Selecting the correct size is crucial, especially for all types of diaper pants. The essential thing is to measure the hip and waist circumference and then compare the data with the size chart of the aid from a given manufacturer. A too small product can cause abrasions or blisters, which especially in immobile patients, heal poorly. On the other hand, with larger sizes, there is a risk of leakage, which significantly reduces patient comfort and increases costs associated with washing clothes.

Diaper Activation

Before using diaper pants, it is necessary to activate them, i.e., prepare them for use. Activation fluffs up the originally compressed absorbent core and raises standing cuffs that prevent side leakage.

The activation itself is carried out in several steps. First, the diaper must be unfolded and stretched several times in length, then the diaper is folded longitudinally and crumpled along the outside, creating a so-called trough. When putting on the activated diaper, it is necessary to keep this trough to ensure maximum protection against leakage.

Quality First

When choosing incontinence aids, pay attention primarily to their quality. A quality product prevents bacterial growth, thereby eliminating unpleasant odors and protecting the skin from eczema and allergies. Beware of products with latex, which is a strong allergen. The aid should also efficiently and evenly divert urine away from the body, which is helped by specially adapted absorbent cores. Last but not least, discretion is important for the patient, so the aid should be soft and non-rustling.

Conclusion

An appropriately chosen incontinence product significantly affects the patient's psychological and health condition. If the aid fits well, problems with leakage are eliminated, and the risk of health complications is minimized. The patient feels comfortable and can practice their favorite activities without much limitation.
