Overview
Patients with neuromuscular diseases are one of the risk groups in which ineffective expectoration is caused by progressive weakening of the respiratory muscles. Depending on the severity of the disease, it is necessary to ensure adequate therapy including airway clearance techniques. If conventional airway clearance techniques and special techniques for inspiratory and expiratory muscle support are not effective enough, it is necessary to include mechanical insufflation-exsufflation in the therapy to avoid further health complications. Summary of reasons causing ineffective expectoration in patients with neuromuscular diseases and summary of studies showing the effectiveness and advantages of using mechanical insufflation-exsufflation in the therapy will be presented in the following text.
