Overview

The authors report on their experience with vestibular rehabilitation. Vertigo is the second mostfrequent general symptom and everybody has some experience with it. The ability to maintainequilibrium is due to the harmonious activity of three systems: vestibular, visual a nd somatosensory.Vestibular rehabilitation is a system of exercise and manoeuvres which stimulate compensatorymechanisms of the organism or build new stereotypes of equilibrium. The basic mechanisms areadaptation and substitution.Practical implementation of vestibular rehabilitation is the concern of specialized rehabilitationdepartments. After detailed otoneurological examination and elimination of an obvious organic factorthe type of rehabilitation strategy is defined. Evaluation is by subjective and posturographic methods. The results, i.e. a better equilibrium and reduction of vertigo, in the authors’ group was, similarly asin the literature, recorded in 86 % patients. Vestibular rehabilitation is effective regardless of age,sex and the period of the patient’s complaints. Some protocols of exercise and results of posturo-graphic assessment are presented.
