Overview
The role of mammography in young women is limited due to a frequent high breast density. Breast ultrasound is a method of choice if palpable mass in breast is present. Annual breast magnetic resonance imaging combined with annual mammography and breast ultrasound is now recommended in BRCA mutation carriers and in all women with a lifetime risk of 20% or more. If MRI is used, diagnosis of intraductal and invasive cancer is achieved with a significantly higher sensitivity and at a more favorable stage.
Key words:
mammography – breast ultrasonography – breast magnetic resonance imaging – BRCA1/2 gene mutation
