Overview
Aim:
The aim of the present study was to evaluate if antibiotic (ATB) therapy significantly reduces post-tonsillectomy pain in the first days after operation.
Methods:
Patients with diagnosis chronic tonsillitis were included in the study and they were divided into two groups – group I (they received ATB therapy - amoxicillin/clavulanic acid for five days) and group II (without ATB therapy). Standardized analgesic protocol was used for all patients. At the day of surgery and first postoperative day metamizol 2.5 g iv. was given. Since second postoperative day, nimesulide 100 mg twice a day was added. Postoperative pain was assessed on linear visual analogue scale (VAS) of 1 to 10 six times per day within the first five postoperative days.
Results:
In day of operation and the first postoperative day no statistically significant difference in the postoperative pain between the study groups was ascertained, 2nd-4th postoperative day patients in group I noted more severe pain, difference was not statistically significant.
Conclusions:
Our study did not prove positive impact of postoperative administration of antibiotics on post-tonsillectomy pain.
