Treatment of Pareses of the Recurrent Nerve by Direct Stimulation of the InnerLaryngeal Muscles

In 42 patients suffering from recurrent nerve paresis with different causes westimulated directly the inner laryngeal muscles with a surface stimulating electrode using squarewave electrical stimuli of duration 0.2 ms, intensity from 5 to 20mA and frequency 2 and 32 Hz. Thistreatment was succesful in 66 % of the patients with total recovery in 45 % and some improvementin 21 %. Possible mechanisms of the positive influence of this kind of treatment are discussed.
