Analysis of mortality on malignant and non-malignant diseases of respiratory tract in miners with coal-workers pneumoconiosis in the Czech Republic

Overview

The aim of the study was the analysis of the differences between total mortality and specific mortality for respiratory diseases (malignant and non-malignant) in coal miners in black coal mines with the acknowledged coal-workers pneumoconiosis and mortality of general male population in the Czech Republic. The sample of 2 054 former coal-workers with the acknowledged pneumoconiosis was analysed using Standardized Mortality Ratio (SMR) and 95 % confidence interval. Significantly higher total mortality (SMR = 1.12), lung cancer mortality (SMR = 1.87), non-malignant respiratory diseases mortality (SMR = 3.77), that was significantly affected by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease mortality (SMR = 3.13), was found in the whole sample. The coal-workers pneumoconiosis was diagnosed as a cause of death in 5.7 % of miners. In the group of miners with the initial form of pneumoconiosis the total and specific mortality was comparable with the general male population in the Czech Republic. SMR increased with the seriousness of pneumoconiosis.
