International healthcare projects of sexually transmitted infections prevention in prostitutes in the Czech Republic

Overview

The authors describe the forms of cooperation between foreign institutions, Czech departments of Dermatovenerology and nongovernmental organisations in the solution of health and social issues concerning prostitution. The projects described are the Czech-Flemish ESO project and Czech-German JANA project.

Within the Czech-Flemish ESO project, a total of 239 prostitutes were examined in Prague between January 2004 and February 2005, hepatitis B vaccination has been initiated in 218 of them. In all, 79% of these women were of Czech nationality, 9.6% Slovak, 5.8% Ukrainian and 2.1% Bulgarian. Anamnestic hepatitis B antibodies were found in 5.4% of the women. HBsAg was positive in one case, chlamydial infection was diagnosed in 6.4% cases, gonorrhoea in 4.6%, syphilis in 2.1%. None of the women was HIV positive. Within the Czech-German JANA project, a total of 794 prostitutes were examined in the area along the Czech-Bavarian border between 1997 and 2004. From foreign nations, 46.5% were from the former Soviet Union, 12 nationalities were represented in total. The prevailing STIs were syphilis, 9.1%, chlamydial infection, 5.5%, gonorrhoea, 1.1%. HBsAg was positive in 4.5% of all cases. HIV infection was detected in three cases.
