Treatment of Depression in Menopausal Women

Overview

A sample of 52 female menopausal depressed patients was divided in to those who were on hormonal substitution (HRT) and those who were not (non HRT). The effects of the treatment with SSRIs were better in the HRT subsample. In 82 % of patients on HRT, remission was achieved during 10 weeks of treatment with the SSRI with which the treatment was started. In comparison, 71 % of patients without HRT had to be switched to another antidepressant to achieve remission. In patients on HRT fewer drug combinations were used and less adverse drug effects were observed.The study shows the beneficial effects of HRT which are important not only for the prevention of osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases and Alzheimer’s disease. HRT decreases the risk of resistance to SSRI in depresed menopausal women.
