Overview

Physical exercise is an important activity for effective prevention and management of DM (diabetes mellitus). Regular physical activity is associated with health benefits including improved quality of life, improved insulin sensitivity, and protection against cardiovascular disease and diabetes-related complications in patients with T1DM (type 1 diabetes mellitus). Optimizing of body weight, glycemic control, aerobic fitness, blood pressure, and lipid profile have also been demonstrated with lifestyle changes involving physical exercise in patients with T2DM (type 2 diabetes). Despite the benefits, exercise can aggravate glycemic oscillations. Mild to intense physical aerobic activity may increase the risk of hypoglycemia during activity and in the recovery phase, while resistance or very intense aerobic exercise may lead to an increase in glycemia. Fear of hypoglycemia appears to be the greatest barrier to exercise in patients with DM.
