Overview

Nowadays we see the global trend of a growing number of diabetic patients. The number of patients is increasing in Slovakia as well. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the second most common microvascular complications and a leading cause of blindness in individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM). The keystone for the better management of patients is the understanding of the risk factors responsible for the development and progression of diabetic retinopathy. The results of previously published studies are not consistent. Common conclusion of these studies is proven impact of the duration and type of DM, HbA1c, and blood pressure on DR development only. More knowledge in this area could bring new epidemiological studies with sufficient number of patients, quality design and a comprehensive ophthalmic and diabetic examination. This paper presents an overview of existing knowledge about the risk factors of diabetic retinopathy and their progression and the expected benefits of the project DIARET SK.

Key words:
diabetes mellitus – diabetic retinopathy – diabetic macular edema – epidemiological – study prevalence
